Sunday October 9.
This summer, our Catholic Youth Summer Camp staff days were
filled with high adventure camp and an intense call to
holiness with the youth of our Diocese. This is our 11th
year of high adventure Catholic Camp reaching thousands of
youth as we celebrate and live our Catholic Faith together
through daily Mass, adoration, confession, Diocesan priests,
Seminarians, religious, clergy, inspiring talks, hilarious
skits, moving dramas, and teen testimonies. Many parents
tell us their children come for the jet skis and other fun
activities and leave talking about their faith. Throughout
the last school year, CYSC provided monthly Youth Ministry
programs for Middle and High School students through Jesus
Jams and Holiness Revolution, had the honor to offer an all
night celebration at the Pontifical College Josephinum for
the beatification of Pope John Paul II, gave ministry and
support for the children of Run the Race Foundation, and
continue to call youth to a life of holiness. With
God’s grace, we have accomplished a great deal, but much
more must be done! Last November, CYSC celebrated its First
Annual Dinner Theater fundraiser. Over 225 people came
together to help raise funds and Build the Adventure for
CYSC ministries. This year’s Dinner Theatre is set for
Sunday, October 9, at Hickory Lakes Country Club. O

Pilgrimage to the Holy Land &
Jordan: Fr. Dan Millisor is offering a
pilgrimage departing from
Somewhere in the time after the
Second Vatican Council, a theory began being advanced that the
choir could not sing alone, and instead should just lead the
congregation in song. Though leading the congregation in song is
one of the purposes of a choir, it is not the only purpose. The
choir is also meant to sing choral music that is too advanced
for the congregation. Choral pieces might come from the
“treasury” of music from our Church’s rich history or might be
worthy new compositions. The reason for the idea that the choir
shouldn’t sing alone is usually attributed to the concept of
full, conscious and active (or actual) participation that is
promoted in Sacrosanctum Concilium. However, full,
conscious and active participation doesn’t necessarily mean
constantly “doing” (or singing) things. The congregation is able
to fully, consciously and actively participate by attentively
listening to the readings from God’s Word, the verses of the
Psalm and Alleluia that are sung by a cantor, the homily given
by the priest or deacon and also by listening to any choral
music sung by the choir. When the choir sings alone, it is not
to entertain the congregation or to “show off” their ability.
Rather, it is to lead the congregation to prayer as they listen
to the words, are inspired by the melody and harmonies and are
hopefully drawn more fully into the action taking place (in
example if the choir sings during the Offertory, the
congregation should be able to watch the offerings being brought
to the altar). The choral piece should either match the readings
of the day, the action taking place while it is being sung (in
example a Eucharistic piece of music during Holy Communion) or
the liturgical season (in example, Rorate Caeli during
Advent). Listen to the words during choral music if you find
yourself at a Choral Mass. Actively participate by listening and
praying the words being sung.
